Imli or Tamarind

In India imli or tamarind is known by many names like in Hindi, Urdu and Punjabi it is called as ‘imli’. In Gujarati it is called as ‘ambali’, Malayalam ‘vaalanpuli’, Marathi ‘chinch’ and in Telegu it is called as ‘amlika’

It is used in numerous ways. Tamarind powder and paste is easily available in market which is used in variety of dishes or recipes. Dry tamarind soaked in water can be used for making chutney or juice.

The flavor of tamarind is mouth watering. Sprinkle little salt on it and you will like it too. Recipes which required to be made sour, tamarind can be used instead of mango powder. In southern India tamarind is used in almost every recipe or dish. While making idli-sambar, tamarind is the most important ingredient. You can also add tamarind in dal, vegetable, meat, chicken etc. due to this they get a savoury taste. To make your meals more interesting, add tamarind chutney in the meals.

Raw tamarind or new tamarind is very savoury in eating. These are very heavy. Tamarind has a sweet - sour taste and is very beneficial for heart. Eating tamarind during cough  is also considered as good.

Tamarind as medicine:

Tamarind helps in curing few health diseases. Chutney made out of tamarind leaves can help in better digestion. During constipations tamarind juice is considered as best. During summers tamarind and mint juice along with salt, sugar and cumin seeds powder is the best drink to curb the ill effects of summers. Its consumption can also help in treating joint pains. It also helps prevents bad odor from your mouth. Tamarind is also used for washing away stains from metal.
